Art Retreats and Creative Art Weekends

Experience surface design and experimental layering that will bring a unique new vocabulary to your artwork and allow for a full exploration of new ideas and materials.

We will use both experimental and traditional techniques to guide our travels through realism, impressionism and into the realm of magic and more.

My house - oil on canvas  yellow-dye 1

Arriving in Stilbaai is a heavenly experience. As you drive into the village you experience a feeling of wellbeing, peace and harmony. You could go for a long walk on the white beach, discover the rock pools, swim in the lagoon or watch the sunset before having dinner.

Monday (start at 9.30)

We will start off by discussing and demonstrating amazing possibilities when using paper, acrylics, oils, charcoal, pallet knife, brushes, wet on wet, blocking, stencils, cements, deco and other textures.

After lunch we prepare a canvas – using the morning demo ideas. No stress as there will be many ideas and examples available. I will first illustrate what to look for and how to start, so that you will know exactly what to do.

Visit the local Stilbaai harbour to do some diary sketches of the light house, beautiful sea cottages, birds, fishing boats and the sea.

Prepare a canvas by using the techniques demonstrated.

Own dinner arrangements.

An art demonstration will show you how you can use easy screen printing art methods to use in your paintings, tablecloths, bedding and even change your wardrobe of existing clothes!

After screen printing on an art article you can take home, we have a light lunch.

Mono-printing is another exiting art printing method that will be demonstrated. You will then do your own mono-print painting.

The evening event is optional – live figure sketching – wine and snacks.

Choose a pre-prepared canvas of your choice or if you choose to do so, prepare a canvas for yourself. We spend the rest of the day painting.

Prepare your own dinner or visit a local Stilbaai restaurant or pub to experience real South African culture.

Jewellery day! Use recycled materials, beads, wire, cement and other mediums to create a unique piece of jewelry to take home.

After a light lunch you can choose to paint, make another piece of jewellery or take some free time to visit the local Stilbaai shops and boutiques.

Dinner tonight will be homemade – experience real South African hospitality.

We look at all your art and decide on a piece that you want to frame. I then show you how to paint and decorate a wooden frame by using transfers, special paint and other interesting objects.

After a light lunch you can experiment with a medium of your choice.

Dine at a local Stilbaai restaurant (optional – own cost).

We say our goodbyes at a traditional South African breakfast feast.

Complete a painting using cement, paint, charcoal, stencils, photo transfers, wax etc. No stress as there will be many ideas and examples available. I will first illustrate what to look for and how to start, so that you will know exactly what to do.

Screen printing on fabric – complete an article such as pillow case, or runner  or scarf etc.  Bring along an old jean or t-shirt (cotton) that you want to upcycle! – fun!

Jewellery day! Complete an article – hot metal leaf or flower – stunning!
