The Matisse exhibition at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg is on until mid August. I will definitely be going!
One of my favourite painters is the French painter Henri Matisse.
His paintings mostly depicts the world as colourful, beautiful and happy. His positive attitude is refreshing as much of the art from that period is sad and depressing.
Some of my fellow artists feel that sadness is more interesting to paint than happiness. I do not argue with them but I am a happy painter so his paintings confirm my need to paint happiness. I know that art should aim at feeding a range of emotions, but I wish more art would make me feel happy, calm, or content in the way Matisse does.
I found the following quote on the internet: “Find a beautiful piece of art. If you fall in love with Van Gogh or Matisse or John Oliver Killens, or if you fall love with the music of Coltrane, the music of Aretha Franklin, or the music of Chopin — find some beautiful art and admire it, and realize that that was created by human beings just like you, no more human, no less.” -Maya Angelou
